Crystal Palace Pursues New Head Coach: Pierre Sage in Focus

Crystal Palace will step up their search for a new head coach this week, with Lens manager Pierre Sage moving into sharper focus as talks are lined up in London.

The Premier League club are braced for disappointment in their pursuit of first-choice target Andoni Iraola. The Bournemouth boss is set to open formal discussions with Liverpool in the coming days as the Anfield club move to replace Arne Slot, who was sacked on Saturday, and that shift has forced Palace to rethink their shortlist.

Palace had made a firm proposal to Iraola after his Europa Conference League triumph, confident they could tempt him to Selhurst Park. That confidence has drained as Liverpool’s interest has hardened, leaving chairman Steve Parish and his board to pivot quickly.

The response has been clear: widen the field, but keep control of the process.

Parish is determined not to be bounced into a rushed appointment. Palace are now weighing up a number of candidates, and within that group Sage has emerged as one of the most intriguing options. The 47-year-old Lens coach is rapidly building a reputation as one of Europe’s brightest tacticians, his stock rising on the back of progressive football and sharp in-game management.

BBC Sport first reported Palace’s interest in Sage on 8 May, though at that stage the club’s hierarchy remained locked on Iraola as their preferred successor to Oliver Glasner. With that path now closing, attention is turning decisively towards alternatives.

Crucially for Palace, Sage is understood to be open to the move. Talks between the French club’s boss and Eagles officials are expected in the early part of this week, a key step in determining whether he becomes a serious contender to take over at Selhurst Park.

For Palace, it is a pivotal moment: stick to their principles, hold their nerve, and find the coach to shape the next phase of the club’s Premier League story.
