Brighton Smash Transfer Record for Luka Vuskovic from Spurs

Brighton have made their boldest move yet in the transfer market, smashing their club record to sign Croatia defender Luka Vuskovic from Tottenham in a deal worth £46m, potentially rising to £50m.

The 19-year-old has signed a five-year contract on the south coast, with an option for a further year, in a transfer that underlines Brighton’s growing ambition and growing confidence in their recruitment model.

A record deal – and a statement

Brighton had already seen two bids rejected last month. They kept coming. This time, Spurs said yes.

The fee eclipses anything the Seagulls have paid before, and they are paying it for a centre-back who only arrived in England in 2025 and has yet to play a Premier League game. That tells you how highly they rate him.

Vuskovic joined Tottenham from Hajduk Split after agreeing a deal two years earlier, a long-term bet from Spurs on one of Europe’s most talked-about teenage defenders. He barely had time to unpack before they sent him to Hamburg, where his reputation accelerated.

  • Thirty Bundesliga appearances.
  • Six goals from centre-back.
  • Rookie of the Season.
  • A place in the Team of the Year.

One loan, one season, and suddenly he was no longer just a prospect – he was a very expensive target.

Brighton, watching closely, moved decisively.

Hurzeler’s new defensive pillar

Head coach Fabian Hurzeler made no secret of the club’s long-standing interest in the Croatian.

The club, he said, had tracked Vuskovic’s development for some time and saw enough last season to be convinced he can operate at the highest level. Hurzeler also struck a note of caution: Vuskovic is still only 19, still adapting, still learning what it means to handle the physical and mental load of the Premier League.

He stressed that the defender will need time to adjust to Brighton’s demands and the pace of English football, but expressed confidence that Vuskovic will handle the step up “in his stride”.

For Hurzeler’s squad, the move is not just an addition, it is a reshaping. Vuskovic effectively walks into the space vacated by Jan Paul van Hecke, who has moved in the opposite direction to Tottenham on a long-term deal worth £52m.

A young, ball-playing Croatia international in, a Netherlands centre-back out, and a net profit on the balance sheet. Brighton’s model keeps turning – but the stakes, and the prices, are rising.

From Split prodigy to World Cup stage

Vuskovic’s story started in Split, where he came through the academy at Hajduk, the club that dominates the city’s footballing identity.

He didn’t just break through. He tore up the records. At 16, he became the youngest player ever to feature in Croatia’s top flight, then went on to become Hajduk’s youngest goalscorer. Those milestones marked him out early as the next big export from a country that keeps producing elite defenders.

His rise has not slowed. He already has six senior caps for Croatia and one international goal, and last month he stepped onto the biggest stage of all, making his World Cup debut against England in the group stages.

That blend of youth, experience, and big-game exposure is exactly what Brighton are banking on.

Brighton’s next step

For Brighton, this is a transfer that fits their identity but stretches their ceiling. They have made a habit of spotting talent before the rest, developing it, then selling for huge profit. Now they are paying top-tier money for a defender who has already proved himself in a major European league.

The pressure on Vuskovic will be real. Record fee. World Cup pedigree. A fanbase that has watched star after star move on and will expect the next wave to be just as good, if not better.

His first test comes soon enough. Brighton open their Premier League campaign at home to Aston Villa on Sunday, 23 August at 14:00 BST.

By then, the club will hope their new record signing is not just a statement on paper, but the new cornerstone of a defence built for the next phase of their rise.
