Bradley Barcola's Transfer Saga: Arsenal and Liverpool Circle

Bradley Barcola is lighting up a World Cup group stage on one continent and fuelling a transfer storm on another.

The 23-year-old winger, fresh from scoring in France’s opening Group I win over Senegal, sits at the heart of one of this summer’s most intriguing sagas: a Paris Saint‑Germain talent, a stalled contract, and two Premier League heavyweights circling with intent.

World champion, but not first choice

Barcola’s rise has been rapid. Thirteen goals and seven assists in 49 appearances last season, a key role in PSG defending both their Champions League crown and Ligue 1 title, and a place in Didier Deschamps’ 26-man World Cup squad. In France, they already talk about him as one of the standout players of his generation, with the ceiling to become truly elite.

Yet at PSG, he is still looking up the ladder.

Luis Enrique leans on Khvicha Kvaratskhelia for the biggest nights, leaving Barcola as the next man in rather than the first name on the teamsheet. For a player in this kind of form, that pecking order matters. It is why, despite PSG’s admiration, he is seriously weighing a move.

PSG know his value. They have set the price at €100m (£86m), a figure designed to test just how badly England’s elite want him.

Romano: contract talks “completely on standby”

Into this tension steps Fabrizio Romano, who has delivered the latest twist. Speaking on his YouTube channel, the transfer specialist made it clear that PSG’s attempt to tie Barcola down has hit a wall.

“Bradley Barcola is on Arsenal’s shortlist for sure, he’s one of the wingers appreciated, but Barcola is also on the list at Liverpool,” Romano said, underlining how both clubs have moved beyond simple admiration and into concrete planning.

“Liverpool keep a close eye on the situation of Barcola. They like the player, he was on the shortlist in 2025 and remains on the shortlist in 2026.

“The feeling on this story is that it’s absolutely open at the moment… negotiations between PSG and Barcola over a new contract are completely, completely on standby.

“PSG and Barcola are not advancing on any deal, and that is why his situation remains one to watch in this summer transfer window, according to my information.

“Let’s see what happens with Liverpool, with Arsenal, and eventually with more clubs.”

For Liverpool and Arsenal, that standstill is an invitation.

Liverpool’s wide search hits resistance in Leipzig

Liverpool’s interest in Barcola does not exist in a vacuum. It is tied directly to their struggle to land RB Leipzig star Yan Diomande.

The Reds have already pushed hard for the Leipzig forward, tabling a €100m offer. Leipzig’s response has been brutal: pay €148m (£128m) or look elsewhere. That stance has turned Diomande from primary target into a major headache.

Liverpool’s recruitment team have reacted by widening the lens. Barcola has emerged as the most attractive alternative, a player they have tracked for over a year and one who fits the profile of the next Anfield wide star.

Romano, speaking on the Born ‘N Red podcast, laid out the current landscape.

“I’m not telling you it’s one or the other player, I’m telling you what I know, and what I know is that Liverpool are maintaining contacts for Diomande AND for Barcola,” he said.

“It’s at completely different stages, because for Diomande they already sent an official bid, they are discussing with Leipzig, talking to the agents. With Barcola it’s an internal feeling I have.

“Internally at Liverpool they are discussing Barcola every single week, it’s a player they appreciate, a player they wanted already in summer 2025, but it wasn’t possible. So, they love Barcola!”

Reports from France suggest the feeling is mutual, with Barcola described as “thrilled” by the idea of a move to Anfield.

Arsenal step to the table

Liverpool, though, are not alone at the door.

Arsenal have placed Barcola firmly on their attacking shortlist and are understood to be preparing an opening offer in the region of €80m (£69m). It is short of PSG’s valuation but loud enough to be taken seriously.

Mikel Arteta’s side have been carefully adding firepower around their existing core. Barcola, with his end product and ability to operate across the frontline, fits the profile of a winger who can both stretch games and decide them.

For Liverpool, that interest is a problem. They cannot afford to drift while Arsenal move first.

Life after Salah

The stakes at Anfield are obvious.

Liverpool have already committed €40m (£34.5m) to bring in Spanish winger Victor Munoz from Osasuna, a significant investment in fresh width. Yet inside the club there is an acceptance that one new wide player is not enough.

They need competition for Cody Gakpo. More than that, they need a succession plan for Mohamed Salah.

Replacing Salah is not a one-window task, and not a one-player job either. But a 23-year-old Champions League winner, already delivering double figures from the wing and comfortable on the biggest stage, is exactly the type of profile Liverpool want at the front of that process.

Barcola knows he cannot wait forever behind Kvaratskhelia in Paris. PSG know they cannot bluff forever with contract talks “completely on standby.” Liverpool and Arsenal know players of this calibre, at this age, rarely come onto the market with the door this far ajar.

The World Cup has put Barcola under the brightest of spotlights. The next decision he makes could define the next decade of two of England’s biggest clubs.
