Ronald Araujo’s Barcelona story is approaching a crossroads, and this time the club will not stand in his way.

Once talked about as one of the elite centre-backs in world football and a player Manchester United were prepared to spend big on, the Uruguay international now finds himself slipping down the pecking order at Camp Nou. Form, fitness and a bruising year off the pitch have all taken their toll.

Araujo, 27, missed stretches of last season as he stepped away from the team to prioritise his mental health. On the pitch, muscular problems disrupted his rhythm and ultimately cost him a place at the 2026 World Cup, where he did not play a single minute for Uruguay.

That detail matters. It underlines how Araujo’s status has changed within the squad.

Pau Cubarsi, Eric Garcia, Gerard Martin and Andreas Christensen are all currently viewed as being ahead of him in the battle for starting places at centre-back. For a 6ft 3in defender who once looked like the cornerstone of Barcelona’s back line for the next decade, that is a stark reality.

The next step comes this summer, when Araujo is expected to sit down with head coach Hansi Flick and sporting director Deco to thrash out his future. Those talks will be decisive. Araujo is described as willing to stay and fight for his place, but he wants to “feel important within the project” – a clear demand for status as well as minutes.

The market, for now, is quieter than it once was. Manchester United and Liverpool have both been linked with him in previous windows, yet there is currently no significant Premier League interest being reported.

Barcelona’s position is clear: they respect the player, they value his contribution over six seasons, but they will listen if he decides he needs a fresh start. The next move belongs to Araujo – stay and claw his way back into Flick’s plans, or walk away from Camp Nou in search of the prominence he once took for granted.
