Atlético Madrid Responds to Barcelona's Julián Álvarez Rumors with Sarcasm

Atlético Madrid have gone on the offensive, accusing Barcelona of running a “smear campaign” and spreading “fake news” over their pursuit of Julián Álvarez – and they did it with a mix of anger, irony and pointed humour.

Barcelona, fresh from sealing a £69m deal for Antony Gordon, have been heavily linked with another big-money move, this time for the Argentine striker. Álvarez, 26, has hit 20 goals in 49 games in all competitions this season and, in a market starved of top forwards, his name was always going to attract noise.

Atlético’s response: he is not for sale. Not at any price they consider reasonable. Internally, they value him at up to £130m. Publicly, they chose a different route – ridicule.

Social Media Turns into a Battlefield

As speculation swirled about an imminent Barcelona bid, Atlético’s official channels went into full parody mode. They posted mock-up images of Barcelona stars Lamine Yamal, Pedri and Raphinha in Atlético shirts, complete with joke transfer offers.

For Yamal, the supposed package included Bad Bunny concert tickets, an annual subscription, and a bag of sunflower seeds. Not exactly the usual add-ons in a modern mega-deal, but that was the point. The Madrid club wanted to expose what they see as the absurdity of the rumour mill around Álvarez.

Raphinha’s doctored image carried a sharp caption: “Don’t believe everything you see, especially if it’s related to Barca.” The message was clear. Atlético believe someone in or around Barcelona is driving a narrative they want no part of.

From Jokes to Accusations

The tone then hardened. The club used another post to address a separate rumour – that they had supposedly made an offer to Barcelona sporting director Deco to join their scouting team in the Brazilian market.

“Finally, we want to take this opportunity to categorically deny that we have made an offer to the sporting director of FC Barcelona to join our scouting team in the Brazilian market,” the statement read, before delivering the punchline. “No, Atlético de Madrid would never do something like that.”

What followed stripped away the humour and laid bare their frustration.

“In recent months, we've been suffering a smear campaign against one of our players,” the club continued. They spoke of “leaked information with ulterior motives,” “fake news,” and “constant disrespect,” and pointed the finger at what they called “the culé version of the propaganda machine inventing little stories, calls before direct matchups.”

The implication: Atlético believe elements around Barcelona are trying to unsettle Álvarez, shape public perception and, perhaps, tilt the balance before key games.

Silence in Barcelona, Questions in Spain

Barcelona declined to comment when approached by Sky Sports News. The Spanish FA has also been contacted for a view on the escalating war of words.

For now, the only thing certain is Atlético’s stance. Álvarez is central, Álvarez is expensive, and Álvarez is not on the market. Not according to them.

The summer window opens on June 15 and closes on September 1. Between those dates, money talks, agents move, and positions soften. Atlético have drawn their line in late May.

The real test is whether they can hold it when Europe’s market truly starts to burn.
