Arsenal's New Bid for Bruno Guimaraes: Will Newcastle Budge?

Arsenal are preparing to go back to Newcastle United with a new offer for Bruno Guimaraes, with Mikel Arteta pushing hard to land the Brazilian as the centrepiece of his midfield rebuild this summer.

The London club have already tested Newcastle’s resolve with an initial verbal proposal that came in at around half of the £100 million the Magpies are demanding for their captain. That was never going to move the dial at St James’ Park. The next one will have to.

Arteta has made no secret inside the club of his desire to add a dominant midfielder who can control games and set the tempo. Guimaraes, a leader in the Newcastle dressing room and one of the Premier League’s standout midfielders, sits right at the top of that list.

Newcastle’s stance is blunt: Guimaraes is not for sale. He has two years left on his contract, with the club holding an option for a further year, and they are under no immediate pressure to cash in. That security allows them to hold firm on a nine-figure valuation and dare Arsenal to meet it.

The twist is on the player’s side. Guimaraes has communicated his desire to join Arsenal, a move that would hand Arteta a ready-made conductor in the middle of the pitch and give the Brazilian Champions League football in London. The interest is mutual, the ambition is clear. The price is the problem.

Arsenal, for their part, are not prepared to be dragged into an auction without limits. They have a clear valuation in mind and will only move if Newcastle show a willingness to talk and edge towards a compromise. If the door stays bolted, they will walk away.

That is not a bluff. Bournemouth’s Alex Scott has emerged as a concrete alternative, and sporting director Andrea Berta has other midfield options lined up if negotiations for Guimaraes collapse. The club have already moved decisively at the back, bringing in French goalkeeper Illan Meslier to strengthen their defensive core.

So the next few weeks at St James’ Park will be telling. Newcastle must decide whether to hold their ground around the £100m mark and keep their captain at the heart of Eddie Howe’s project, or engage with an Arsenal side that believes Guimaraes could be the missing piece in a title push.

One thing is certain: Arsenal will not wait forever. If Newcastle refuse to pick up the phone, the Gunners will simply turn the page and build their midfield around someone else.
