Yan Diomande’s Ambition: Liverpool's Next Star
Yan Diomande has made his choice. The RB Leipzig winger wants Liverpool. He wants Anfield. And he wants Mohamed Salah’s place on the right of that famous front line.
Liverpool’s interest in the 19-year-old has been no secret. The club have tracked the Ivory Coast international for months, identifying him as the ideal long-term successor to Salah, who is expected to leave this summer. Now the player’s stance has become clear: according to The i Paper, Diomande is “keen on the move – and the prospect of becoming Salah’s heir”.
That clarity from the player has not, however, brought the deal any closer to completion.
A willing player, a wary club
Liverpool are already in talks with Diomande’s representatives, with transfer insider Graeme Bailey confirming that discussions with the winger’s camp are under way. Paris Saint-Germain are circling as well, sensing an opportunity to lure one of Europe’s brightest young wide forwards to Ligue 1.
Yet Diomande, as reported, has his heart set on Liverpool. The idea of stepping into Salah’s role, of carrying that responsibility in front of the Kop, appeals to him. For a teenager, it is a bold target. For Liverpool, it is exactly the kind of mentality they want.
The problem sits 700 miles away in eastern Germany.
RB Leipzig do not want to sell. Club sources indicate they are intent on keeping Diomande for at least another season and are working on a new contract that would include a release clause. Crucially, Diomande is not agitating for a move. He is open to Liverpool, but he is not forcing Leipzig’s hand.
That gives the Bundesliga side all the leverage they need.
The price of Salah’s heir
Leipzig’s valuation is brutal. The i Paper reports that the German club want £120 million. Bild have gone even higher, suggesting the asking price could climb to €150m (around £129.6m).
For Fenway Sports Group, that figure is the crux of the problem.
Liverpool know they must replace Salah’s goals, creativity and aura. They also know that committing well over £100m to a 19-year-old who has only just begun to establish himself in the Bundesliga would be a huge call, even in a market where elite attacking talent comes at a premium.
FSG are interested. They are engaged. But they need movement on the fee. Without it, the deal stalls.
Iraola’s first big test
Inside Liverpool, there is no doubt about the football case. New head coach Andoni Iraola is fully behind the pursuit. The Spaniard sees Diomande as a perfect fit for his aggressive, front-foot style: a winger who can hurt teams one-on-one, press with intensity and grow into the role over several seasons.
Iraola’s endorsement matters. This is the first major attacking target of his reign, the first statement signing Liverpool are trying to deliver for their new manager. Secure Diomande, and it sends a message about continuity and ambition after the Jürgen Klopp era. Miss out, and questions will follow about how quickly Liverpool can rebuild their frontline.
For now, Leipzig are unmoved. They want Diomande to stay, to sign fresh terms, to develop further under their watch before any release clause comes into play. Liverpool’s interest has not changed that stance yet.
Liverpool’s dilemma
All of this leaves FSG at a crossroads. Push harder, and they risk entering a bidding war at numbers that would reshape their entire summer strategy. Hold their line, and Leipzig may simply shut the door.
Liverpool cannot wait forever. Salah’s departure will leave a hole on the right that no internal option can fully fill. If Leipzig refuse to soften their position, the club will have to turn to alternative targets, looking for another winger capable of carrying the weight of being “the one after Salah”.
For Diomande, the message is simple: he wants Liverpool, he wants the shirt, he wants the stage. Whether Liverpool can afford the price of that ambition is now the question hanging over the rest of their summer.
