Manchester United Target Lewis Hall Amid Unrest at Newcastle
Manchester United have been handed an unexpected advantage in their pursuit of Lewis Hall, with the Newcastle defender increasingly unsettled after missing out on Thomas Tuchel’s England World Cup squad.
United’s interest in Hall is no secret. Newcastle are understood to value the 21-year-old at around £60million, and the left-back has already been identified at Old Trafford as a major target for this window. TEAMtalk reported on June 9 that Hall views a move to United as a significant step in his development, with the lure of Champions League football – which he sampled with Newcastle last season – a key part of the attraction.
Since then, the dial has moved. United had been in talks over Nathaniel Brown, but with the Germany international left-back heading to Bayern Munich, the Premier League side have shifted their focus decisively towards Hall. He is now described as their preferred option on the left side of defence, with figures at Old Trafford increasingly confident that the player would be open to the move.
Inside the club, the mood is bullish. Sources at United remain convinced that Hall is interested in joining, and plans are already being drawn up for what has been described as a “concerted push” over the coming weeks to test Newcastle’s resolve.
The timing of that push could prove significant. According to The Sun, Hall has been left “frustrated” by his omission from Tuchel’s 26-man England squad for the World Cup, and believes his treatment at Newcastle in the latter stages of the season played a part.
The frustration is easy to trace. Hall, naturally a left-back, was repeatedly asked to plug gaps on the opposite flank as Eddie Howe managed injuries to right-back Tino Livramento. In the penultimate match before Tuchel named his squad, Hall started at right-back in a 1-1 draw with Nottingham Forest. He then endured a difficult afternoon in April’s 2-1 defeat to Bournemouth, substituted at half-time, and found himself on the bench for the next two games against Arsenal and Brighton.
Those details matter to a young player on the fringes of international selection. The report claims Hall feels being played out of position, then losing his starting place, contributed to Tuchel overlooking him for the Three Lions. Livramento, whose absence Hall had been covering, made the squad. Djed Spence has also travelled as cover for starting left-back Nico O’Reilly, despite being right-footed.
For United, that sense of injustice only sharpens the opportunity. A player who already sees Old Trafford as the next step now has another reason to consider a change of scenery.
Newcastle, though, are pushing back against any suggestion of a deeper rift. Club sources insist there has been no falling out between Hall and Howe, despite the player’s disappointment. That stance was reinforced by The Telegraph’s Northern Football correspondent Luke Edwards, who moved quickly to cool talk of a breakdown in relations.
Posting on X, Edwards wrote that “there has been no falling out between Eddie Howe and Lewis Hall. If anything the player is extremely grateful for the work done to turn him into an England international during his time at Newcastle.” He also pointed out that Hall and Howe share the same agent, adding that if Hall genuinely wanted to leave, Newcastle would already have been informed.
So the picture is finely balanced. Newcastle have a valuable young defender tied to a manager he is said to respect, but who feels his World Cup dream has been dented by a season spent firefighting on the wrong flank. Manchester United, armed with Champions League football and a clear need at left-back, are readying a serious move.
If Old Trafford comes calling with a formal bid, the next decision will rest with Hall. Does he stay and fight for his place on Tyneside, or gamble that a new role and a new stage in Manchester can put him back on England’s radar before the next major tournament?
