Manchester City Intensify £100m Pursuit of Elliot Anderson

Manchester City have taken a punch and come straight back swinging. Nottingham Forest have rejected their opening offer for Elliot Anderson, but the Premier League champions are driving hard to get the deal done — and fast.

Forest dig in over £100m price

City moved earlier this week with a first bid for the 23-year-old midfielder, only to be knocked back by Forest, who value the England international at around £100 million. The Midlands club believe they hold a premium asset and are in no rush to fold.

Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis is handling the negotiations himself from the City Ground. His stance has been clear for months: Anderson will not leave cheaply. Figures as high as £125 million have been mentioned around Forest, while City see the deal closer to £80 million. That leaves a sizeable gap for both sides to bridge in the coming days.

City, though, are not walking away.

City accelerate as Anderson makes his move

Inside the Etihad, Anderson has been the preferred midfield target for the best part of a year. Director of football Hugo Viana and incoming manager Enzo Maresca both view him as the ideal profile to replace Bernardo Silva, whose departure has opened a significant hole in City’s midfield.

The pursuit has now reached a critical phase. According to Fabrizio Romano, City will try to close the Anderson deal “as soon as possible”, with the club determined to have their main midfield signing in place before pre-season begins in July.

The player has already taken a decisive step towards that move. England manager Thomas Tuchel has allowed Anderson to undergo a Manchester City medical during the FIFA World Cup in North America, underlining both the seriousness of City’s interest and the trust in the player’s professionalism during the tournament.

Anderson, formerly of Newcastle United, has indicated his preference to join City despite interest from Manchester United. That choice gives City a powerful advantage: they are negotiating with a club that wants top dollar, but for a player who has made his mind up.

Negotiation brinkmanship

This is now a classic stand-off. Forest know they have a 23-year-old England international under long-term control and see this as a defining sale for the club’s project. City, fresh from another era of dominance, are used to getting their primary targets but have drawn a clear internal line on valuation.

The next stage will be about structure as much as size: guaranteed fee, add-ons, and timing of payments. Both sides expect more detailed talks over a price that narrows the gap between Forest’s £100 million stance and City’s lower starting point.

The clock, though, is ticking loudest for City.

Maresca’s urgency and Tonali in the background

Enzo Maresca wants his squad largely settled by the time pre-season opens. His system leans heavily on technical, box-to-box midfielders who can control tempo and break lines — exactly the skill set City believe Anderson can bring to a team that has just lost Bernardo Silva’s blend of creativity and industry.

Sandro Tonali has been scouted as a serious alternative should the Anderson pursuit collapse. The Newcastle United midfielder fits the same broad profile and gives City leverage in talks. But right now, Tonali is the contingency plan, not the headline act.

City’s focus remains firmly on Anderson. The medical clearance, the player’s preference, the year-long scouting and internal alignment — all of it points in one direction. They want this done before Maresca’s first sessions on the training pitch.

The question now is simple: who blinks first, the champions chasing their chosen midfielder, or a Forest hierarchy convinced they are holding a £100 million prize?
