Liverpool's Defensive Reinforcement Target Jan Paul van Hecke Set for Tottenham Move

Liverpool’s search for defensive reinforcements is set to hit an early setback, with Jan Paul van Hecke understood to have his heart firmly set on Tottenham Hotspur and a reunion with Roberto De Zerbi.

The Brighton and Hove Albion centre-back, under contract on the south coast until 2027, has drawn heavy interest across the Premier League. Liverpool, facing a changing of the guard at the back as Ibrahima Konate departs and Virgil van Dijk edges deeper into his thirties, moved early. They made contact, tested the waters, and explored the possibility of bringing the 26-year-old Netherlands international to Anfield.

They were not alone. Chelsea and Newcastle United have also monitored Van Hecke, with Dutch outlet VI describing him as “Brighton’s absolute star player” in the past months. For a defender who has grown in stature under De Zerbi’s demanding, front-foot football, the level of attention is no surprise.

Spurs surge ahead

Tottenham have accelerated harder than anyone. VI reports that Spurs have “pushed ahead in recent weeks” and are now preparing a third bid to pry Van Hecke from Brighton. Personal terms are already agreed, leaving the two clubs to thrash out a fee.

The key factor sits in the dugout. Van Hecke knows De Zerbi well from their time together at Brighton, and those conversations about a move to north London have clearly hit the right notes. The Dutchman is said to have “become enthusiastic about the talks” with the Italian, who has made the defender a priority as he reshapes Tottenham’s back line.

The pull of that relationship appears decisive. According to VI, Van Hecke has “made up his mind: it has to be Tottenham.” Interest from elsewhere, including Liverpool’s approach and the attention from Chelsea and Newcastle, has effectively been pushed to the background. The message from the player’s side is clear: he only wants Spurs.

Tottenham, sensing that clarity, are pushing to close. The club are working to move the deal into its final stages as quickly as possible, with one eye firmly on the international calendar. The aim is simple – get everything signed off before Van Hecke’s focus switches fully to the World Cup, sparing him the distraction of an unresolved future and locking in what VI describes as a “top transfer.”

Dutch voices, same direction

Inside the Netherlands camp, the move is already a talking point.

Tottenham defender Micky van de Ven has been doing his bit, openly admitting he has spoken to his compatriot about life in north London. “I did talk to Jan Paul briefly about Tottenham. I think it is a good step for him,” Van de Ven said, a concise but telling endorsement from someone who has already made the leap and flourished.

National team manager Ronald Koeman views the situation through a different lens, but the conclusion is not far off. Asked about Van Hecke’s proposed move to Spurs, Koeman underlined the value of certainty rather than the destination itself.

“Ideally, I would prefer a player to have peace of mind regarding his club,” he said on Sunday. “And that there is clarity about the future. But I cannot stop it.”

For Koeman, the priority is a settled defender heading into a major tournament. For Van Hecke, it is a clear pathway under a coach he trusts, at a club ready to build around him. For Liverpool, it looks like a door closing just as they knocked.

Tottenham now have their target, their manager’s backing, and the player’s commitment. All that remains is for Brighton to name their price – and for Spurs to decide how badly they want the defender who has already chosen them.
